One man is dead and another is in hospital following an altercation in North Sydney, N.S.

Cape Breton Regional Police responded to an apartment complex in the King Street area at midnight, where they located a 25-year-old man with life-threatening stab wounds.

The man was taken to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where he died.

About 15 minutes after the first call, police were called back to King Street, where they located a 21-year-old man suffering from what appeared to be life-threatening stab wounds.

He was taken to the Cape Breton Regional with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the stabbings were the result of an altercation between the two men, who were known to each other. Investigators say they are not looking for any other suspects.

"Police are speaking to witnesses, people in the area, doing a neighbourhood canvass, taking statements and trying to piece together exactly what happened and what led to this altercation,” said Cape Breton Regional Police spokesperson Desiree Vassallo.

The stabbings have left neighbours feeling shaken. One woman, who asked not to be named, says she helped one of the men until first responders arrived. She is a tenant in the apartment complex on King Street where one of the men was found.

“He was full of stab wounds, and he almost died in my arms last night,” she said.

Another neighbour says police have been called to the area before.

“It’s just a lot of noise, ruckus. Crazy stuff happening every night or every second night,” said Cheryl Chambers.

“It’s a wonderful, pleasant neighbourhood, with the exception of that one particular house.”

Police are not releasing the identity of the man who died. They say they have recovered a weapon. There is no word yet on whether any charges will be laid.
