After 10 weeks on the run, a fugitive wanted for murder was led into the prisoners’ box in a Moncton courtroom Wednesday morning.
Marissa Shephard is charged in the violent Dec. 17 killing of 18-year-old Bailee Wylie, whose body was found in a burned-out home.
Shephard was arrested Tuesday outside a Moncton hotel, along with two other people.
People thanked the RCMP as they arrived at the Moncton courthouse Wednesday morning.
When asked how his client was doing, lawyer Gilles Lemieux responded, “As well as can be expected, facing a first-degree murder charge.”
Shephard also faces a charge of arson.
“She's been questioned by police for God knows how long in the last 24 hours, so she's tired and drawn,” Lemieux said.
Also arrested on Tuesday were 22-year-old Stephen Nagle, who is the father of Shephard’s child, and 32-year-old Krystal Dawn Toole. Both Moncton residents are charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder.
Nagle's mother spoke to media, but didn't want to give her name.
“I feel bad for Baylee Wylie's mom. I feel bad for all of them. She lost a son and we all got caught up in that mess,” Nagle’s mother said.
The Crown is not laying any new charges against Shephard at this time.
During his appearance, Nagle shouted to the court, “I thought she was dead. I went to convince her to turn herself in.”
Nagle’s mother said she believes that’s what her son was trying to do.
Baylee Wylie's mother and aunt were also in the courtroom Wednesday, but they asked for privacy.
Days after the Moncton blaze, 18-year-old Devin Morningstar was charged with first-degree murder and arson.
Tyler Noel, 18, was arrested on a Canada-wide warrant Jan. 9, in Petitcodiac, N.B., and has also been charged with first-degree murder and arson.
Shephard will be back in court on March 18.
