For decades, 82-year-old Edna Vieau has worked tirelessly to make our region a home away from home for seafarers.

Vieau has volunteered with the Mission to Seafarers in the port of Halifax for more than 24 years, and her passion to help runs deep.

Both her husband and her son were seafarers, and both lost their lives at sea.

Now with care and attention, she's making tough times for others easier. Since 1997, she has helped to fill more than 30,000 shoe box gifts for seafarers away from home.

Edna says she likes to look after the seafarers, and the gratitude she receives is enough to keep her going for years to come.

As for her fellow volunteers, they say they often look to Edna to see how things are done, and they wanted to honour her for making a difference in the lives of people who spend many months working at sea.

Congratulations to Edna Vieau, our Maritimer of the Week!

If you know someone deserving of our Maritimer of the Week award, we want to hear about it.

It doesn't matter how old they are, the nature of the "good deed" they've done, or what part of the region they live in – we want your ideas!
