The City of Moncton will be getting a new downtown centre.

In a special meeting Wednesday night, Moncton city council voted to proceed with the project, which could be one of the largest construction ventures in the city's history.

The multi-use sport and entertainment facility will cover 7.5 acres and include an ice pad, meeting spaces, a restaurant and an outdoor public plaza.

A public presentation with the builder and city will be held in September and October to showcase its features.

All three levels of government are contributing to the price tag. The total cost for the project will be $107.9 million. It’s expected the facility will create 713 full-time positions during construction, and 49 jobs when it’s open to the public.

Construction is set to start early next year, with a completion date of September 2018.
