A New Brunswick couple is celebrating an extra special wedding anniversary after claiming the $9.9 million prize from Wednesday's Lotto 6-49 draw.

Peter and Rhonda Lockhart of Lower Coverdale discovered their big win on Thursday - the same day as their fifth wedding anniversary.

“That means our marriage has been worth $2 million a year,” said Peter as he and Rhonda collected their prize in Moncton Friday morning.

The pair works for Canada Post. Peter said Rhonda had already left for her shift Thursday morning when he checked the ticket.

“I checked the numbers several times, held the ticket up next to the computer screen and I could not believe what I was seeing,” he said. “I think we got the big one!”

Peter said he has been buying lottery tickets for about four decades. This is his first major win.

The couple is the lone winner from the May 14 Lotto 6/49 draw.

They say they plan to renovate their home, including a new roof, a garage, landscaping work and paving their driveway.

“I might look to get a new pickup truck,” said Peter. “I guess now I can have whichever one I want.”

“Now he will be able to pay off his mortgage on his place that he just bought here a few years back and get the place fixed up a little bit more,” said his son, William Lockhart.

Rhonda said she plans to keep working for Canada Post but Peter hasn’t decided whether he will retire.

“I am not sure what I am going to do yet. I’m still batting that around the back of my head.”

The win is the biggest Lotto 6/49 Jackpot prize awarded in New Brunswick since September 2010.

Retailers who sell winning tickets receive a one per cent commission, or $100,000 in this case.

The ticket was sold at the Elgin Country Market in Elgin.

Business owner April Steeves said the store’s last big win was a $100,000 scratch ticket sold a little over a year ago.

“It means that I can pay off a lot of bills and actually run it a little bit stress-free,” said Steeves.

In addition to some home renovations, Lockhart said he also plans to share his winnings with family.

“I’m going to share it with them, she is going to share it with hers, everybody is going to get a little something.”
