Questions about an MLA’s unpaid rent have made their way to the floor of the New Brunswick legislature.
Earlier this week it came to light that Greg Davis, the MLA for Campbellton-Restigouche Centre, owed more than $6,000 in back rent for his constituency office and it isn’t the first time his rent has been overdue.
A similar situation arose in 2012, which prompted questions from the New Brunswick Liberals in the legislature Thursday.
“If you look at the MLA’s expenses online for the past three years, Mr. Davis maxed out his expenses, his allowance, so there was money expensed there for his constituency office, so what is the extra money for, or where did the money go at the end of the day?” asked Liberal MLA Victor Boudreau.
The extra money was a loan in 2012 from the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick. The party’s executive director confirmed the loan Thursday and said it’s being repaid.
“We have an arrangement with him and we’re satisfied with what the arrangements are and we’re in progress with it,” says J.P. Soucy.
“We’re OK with the arrangement that we made and the progress of it. That arrangement is between the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick and the MLA.”
Around the same time the news of his debt broke, Davis released a statement saying he wouldn’t be seeking reelection because of ongoing heath concerns.
But the Liberals say they want answers about the unpaid rent and the loan.
“Maybe it’s all very legitimate and very explainable, but they’re not providing any details and that’s what makes us worry,” said Boudreau.
Without answers, the Liberals said they will keep asking questions.
