WOODSTOCK, N.B. -- A 35-year-old man from New Brunswick's Woodstock First Nation was charged Monday following an armed standoff in which gunfire was exchanged between police and the suspect.
The Mounties responded just after 3 p.m. Sunday to a report that an intoxicated man with a loaded rifle had been uttering threats on Eagles Nest Drive on the reserve.
Officers say the man had barricaded himself inside a home and the surrounding homes were evacuated.
A negotiator was brought in and the man surrendered to police shortly after 2 a.m. Monday.
RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah said the suspect was taken to hospital for a non-life threatening injury but officers are still trying to determine how he was injured. No one else was hurt.
Farrah said the area was cordoned off while investigators searched for evidence.
She said police didn't notify the public about Sunday afternoon's incident until midday Monday because there were many details that had to be checked.
"This was a serious incident with a lot of elements that needed to be confirmed before we could inform the public of all the details," Farrah said.
Chad Tomah is charged with carrying a weapon dangerous to the public peace. He is in custody and has a bail hearing Thursday morning in Woodstock provincial court.
