MONCTON, N.B. -- The RCMP say a 45-year-old New Brunswick man has been handed a five-month conditional sentence for obstructing a police officer during a shale gas protest in June.
Police say John Levi of the Elsipogtog First Nation pleaded guilty to the charge Tuesday in Moncton provincial court.
The Mounties say Levi was among a group of people protesting seismic work being done in the Kent Junction area by SWN Resources Canada on June 21.
The RCMP say Levi also admitted to breaching an earlier court order.
Police say the five-month conditional sentence will be followed by six months' probation.
They say conditions imposed by the court require Levi to stay 500 metres away from SWN Resources employees and equipment, and he must not interfere with their operations.
