CAMPBELLTON, N.B. - The bullet that injured an RCMP officer last week in northern New Brunswick came from the gun of his colleague, police in Quebec say.

Sgt. Ronald McInnis of the Surete du Quebec, the provincial police force investigating the shooting, said the incident occurred following a chase when two Mounties were trying to stop a man wanted on a number of warrants.

The car they were pursuing crashed into a ditch near Campbellton and the driver was taken into custody.

McInnis couldn't say how the officer was shot, but did confirm an RCMP weapon was involved.

"The projectile came from the firearm of his teammate," he said Monday.

McInnis could not release the name of the injured officer nor that of his colleague, but did say the injured cop has been released from hospital.

The shooting occurred last Wednesday morning following the chase on the Flatlands Road, west of Campbellton.

McInnis said the investigation is nearing completion.

He said investigators are awaiting some reports from experts, and once complete, the police file will be given to the Crown in New Brunswick for review.
