FREDERICTON -- New Brunswick political parties have leaped into campaign mode, days before the writ drop that kicks off the official start of the election period.
Brian Gallant, leader of the governing Liberals, launched his campaign Sunday, saying the party is running on the themes of fairness and opportunity in its bid for re-election in the fall.
The province's Green Party plans to get ahead of the writ as well, with party leader David Coon telling The Canadian Press in an email that he plans to launch his campaign on Tuesday.
Early polls suggest the election may be too close to call, though Gallant's main opponent appears to be Blaine Higgs, who became head of the Progressive Conservative Party in October 2016.
Elections New Brunswick spokesman Paul Harpelle says there is nothing preventing any of the parties from campaigning before the writs are issued on Thursday, although they do have pre-election limits they must obseve.
Voters are expected to head to the polls on Sept. 24.
