No word on opening date for Ihtoli-maqahamok skating surface in Saint John

Share

Saint John residents looking to do some skating over the holiday break won’t be able to do so at the city’s newest outdoor surface.

While the new ice surface at Ihtoli-maqahamok – The Gathering Space appears ready for skating, signs around the perimeter ask residents to stay off the ice.

The City of Saint John does not have a timeline for when the skating surface will be open to the public, stating simply that preparations are still underway in an email sent to CTV Atlantic. One area highlighted by the city that still needs completion is a shelter to house the rink’s Zamboni.

The city did not specify when the space will be open, saying they will let the public know a timeline once available.

The skating surface opening is the latest in delays when it comes to the new public space in front of Market Square. The skating surface was initially suppose to open last winter before construction delays cancelled the plan. The space itself opened in July of this year after initially having a completion date by the end of 2023.
