Sunday night's nor'easter hit Cape Breton hard, leaving beaches battered, trees down and ships on the ocean floor.

Jeannie Chaisson, the owner of Jeannie Two, which had been dockside at the Westmount Yacht Club, doesn't know if she'll ever be able to enjoy cruising on her 36-foot vessel.

It sank in the storm Sunday night.

"We have enjoyed the boat for 22 years and it's really sad to see it sitting on the bottom over there. Can it be salvaged? We don't know. We really don't know," she said. "That is up to the insurance company."

In Sydney, some trees were blown over and their roots tore up sidewalks and curbs. Others caused extensive property damage. No one was injured.

The storm also damaged the Dominion Beach provincial park, still recovering from the effects of stormy seas last December.

"I've been here for 30 years," said Dan McCarthy, a yacht club manager. "We've seen nothing like this. We've seen high water levels from storm surges, but nothing like this."

It could be days before the cleanup gets underway to remove some of the larger items.
