Halifax Regional Police say they have found nothing suspicious at an elementary school after an alleged threat.
Police responded to John W. MacLeod Elementary School on Purcells Cove Road at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday. They say the call came in to the school.
The school was evacuated and all students and staff were relocated to the nearby Fleming Tower School.
An emergency response team and K-9 unit assisted officers as they combed the scene for evidence.
Purcells Cove Road between Williams Lake Road and Collindale Street was closed to traffic for nearly two hours while police investigated.
Nearby residents were advised to either leave their homes or stay away from windows.
By 12:30 p.m., it was all over, and police had found nothing.
Police say their investigation has now turned to determining who made the threat.
Halifax Regional Police spokesperson Cst. Pierre Bourdages says some details are being withheld from the public as the investigation continues.
“We're not disclosing the manner through which this bomb threat came to the school,” Bourdages said.
Halifax Regional School Board spokesperson Doug Hadley says the decision to close John W. MacLeod Elementary for the day was made early on.
“We made a decision about 40 minutes later to cancel school for the day,” he said.
Some parents applauded the school board for being well prepared.
“We came here. The kids were ready to go… I've been called by two other people at the school besides Ms. Gourley, the principal, to make sure that someone was coming to get them,” said parent Felecia Kimball.
For many parents and students, it was a scary incident.
“You just never know what it could have been. So I was just glad that everything was fine,” said parent Heidi Forewell.
