HALIFAX -- The leader of Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservative party wants to take the guessing game out when elections are called in the province.
Jamie Baillie says if the Tories win the next election, he will implement fixed election dates for the province.
The Quebec legislature adopted a fixed date in June, leaving Nova Scotia as the only province without a set date for its elections.
Nine provinces, the Northwest Territories and elections at the federal level are now held on set dates.
Trying to figure out when the next election will be held in Nova Scotia has become a popular game among political pundits as the NDP is in the final year of its mandate, causing widespread speculation on the possibilities of an election call.
Premier Darrell Dexter kept everyone in the dark Thursday on when he is planning to call the election.
"You are all wondering about election speculation and this is what I'll tell you: We are one day closer to an election today than we were yesterday, how's that?" he said after a cabinet meeting.
Dexter also dodged questions on whether he had decided on a date even if he won't share it with the public.
"I'm just trying to get things done (that) I need to get done and we will call an election at an appropriate time," he said.
Dexter has previously rejected calls for legislation to fix election dates, saying it would only lead to prolonged campaigns.
