The mayoral race in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality grew from two to three candidates yesterday, but now it has dropped back down to two.

Sydney businessman and longtime community activist Owen Fitzgerald announced today that he is dropping out of the race to replace outgoing mayor John Morgan.

Fitzgerald first announced his intention to run for mayor in May, but today he threw his support behind former justice minister Cecil Clarke instead.

Clarke, who also served as attorney general, energy minister and speaker of the legislature, announced his intention to run for mayor yesterday at Centre 200 in Sydney.

Rankin MacSween, the longtime president of New Dawn enterprises, a not-for-profit community development corporation, is the only other candidate in the running.

The election takes place on Oct. 20.
