KENSINGTON, P.E.I. -- A fire destroyed a house on Prince Edward Island Saturday evening, leaving a family without a home.

Firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 6 p.m. to find the two-storey residence on Malpeque Road near Kensington engulfed in flames.

Kensington Volunteer Fire Department chief Allan Sudsbury said more than 30 firefighters worked to contain the extensive blaze.

"(The house) was fully involved downstairs, with flames coming outside the downstairs windows, and was fully engulfed up to the attic," said Sudsbury on Sunday.

Firefighters extinguished the fire about three hours later.

Sudsbury said the fire caused extensive structural damage and the house will likely have to be torn down.

"It pretty well gutted the home," he said. "It hit every room in the building."

No one was injured.

Sudsbury said the Canadian Red Cross is helping the family with lodging.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
