It may be an old-fashioned idea, but a Prince Edward Island town has breathed new life into the use of rain barrels.

Stratford Mayor David Dunphy is urging his residents to look to their past when it comes to preserving water.

“The residents have said that they want to be a more environmentally-friendly community,” he says.

In an effort to go green, Stratford is offering free rain barrels to its residents.

Shaun McAndrew has jumped on board with the program. He says he wants to do his part in the fight against climate change.

“Lately, it has been quite dry. It’s a concern, the lawns have become parched” says McAndrew.

McAndrew says he is planning to have his barrel up and running soon.

“In terms of conservation, they are not using municipal water at that time. They are also using and reusing water from the rain at a more opportune time,” says Dunphy.

He hopes the simple approach will help save a precious natural resource. In addition, the barrels are also designed to keep water from overflowing infrastructure.
