RCMP are investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a man in Cole Harbour, N.S.
Police and fire crews were called to the two-storey home on Nestor Crescent shortly after 6:30 a.m. Monday.
“When we woke up there was about five fire trucks from there up and around the corner,” says one area resident. “There was two police cars and an ambulance.”
“There was tons of smoke billowing out. It was just billowing out,” describes neighbour Terry Johnson.
Firefighters removed a 67-year-old man from the home but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have identified the victim as James Bamwoya. They say he died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire. His death is not considered suspicious.
“Crews were able to knock the fire down very quickly,” said Mike Blackburn, division commander of the Halifax Regional Fire Service.
“They were able to bring the victim out, and as I say, we do have a fatality.”
No one else was home at the time of the fire.
“I suppose that’s a small blessing. At least it was only one,” says Johnson.
He says Bamwoya had only lived in the home for a few years.
“Don’t know much about him but he was nice, he was friendly.”
Investigators say the fire is not considered suspicious. They believe it was caused by an electrical fault in a cord.
