OTTAWA -- The Supreme Court of Canada will not hear the appeal of a New Brunswick man convicted of kidnapping a woman at knifepoint and holding her in his apartment for nearly a month while he sexually assaulted her.
Romeo Cormier was sentenced to 18 years in 2011 after being found guilty of kidnapping, forcible confinement, sexual assault, assault with a weapon, robbery and uttering death threats.
The woman -- whose identity is protected by a publication ban -- testified during the trial that Cormier grabbed her at knifepoint in February 2010 outside a Moncton, N.B., shopping mall where she worked.
She told the court Cormier forced her to his one-room basement apartment, where he sometimes gagged and sexually assaulted her until she finally managed to escape.
Cormier says the woman came to his apartment of her own free will, and they engaged in consensual sex games -- a claim the woman denied.
As is its usual practice in leave to appeal rulings, the Supreme Court gave no reasons for the decision.
