The search for a missing 22-year-old New Brunswick man has expanded into Nova Scotia.
Mitchell Veenhuis hasn’t been seen or heard from for almost two weeks.
For the past several days, the young man’s family and friends have been scouring woods near his home in Maquapit Lake.
Veenhuis was last seen on Oct. 14.
His mother says he left his apartment around 8:30 p.m. and told his roommate he would be back within half-an-hour but never returned.
“It’s been a nightmare,” says his mother, Stacey Heagney. “You don’t think it’ll ever happen to you.”
While searches are happening in New Brunswick, some family and friends traveled to Pictou County, N.S. where the 22-year-old grew up.
“We’re really looking at any possibilities to where Mitchell could be right now,” says his brother, Matthew Veenhuis. “So if he did take off somewhere we figure he may have come close to home. It’s familiar area down here, he knows people, he knows trails, the woods, so it may be a good place we should start looking.
So far, police have conducted an aerial search, but the family says they would like to see more help from police throughout the search.
“I’ve had a lot of help from the constables that are working directly on the case as far as verbal communication goes,” explains Heagney. “I haven’t seen any activity as far as them searching.”
“I kind of feel that they’re not taking it as serious as it is,” adds Veenhuis’ brother Matthew.
Those who know Mitchell Veenhuis say his disappearance is concerning because it’s out of character.
