Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team is investigating after a man died while in police custody in Liverpool.

RCMP were called to Riverhead Road in Port Mouton after 11 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of an intoxicated man.

When they arrived at the scene, police say they found the 40-year-old man lying on the ground.

Paramedics also attended the scene and assessed the man before police placed him in a holding cell.

Police found the man unresponsive in his cell shortly before 2 a.m. Paramedics were unable to revive the man and he was taken to the Queens General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.

The matter has been referred to the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team, which is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing
