All three Maritime provinces are suspending provincial student loan payments for those affected by the wildfires in Fort McMurray.

All Nova Scotia student-loan borrowers who live in Fort McMurray will not have to make payments on their provincial loans for six months.

Those with Fort McMurray addresses already on file will automatically have their loan payments suspended.

Advanced Education Minister Kelly Regan says loans will automatically be suspended for about 120 people who have Fort McMurray addresses.

She says there may be more people eligible, such as those students in Alberta who still have Nova Scotia addresses.

Regan says anyone who is unsure whether they qualify should contact Nova Scotia Student Assistance.

Tuesday’s announcement comes a day after New Brunswick announced a “student loan payment holiday” for those affected by the wildfire, although it did not say for how long payments will be suspended.

Prince Edward Island announced student-loan relief for Islanders last week.

The province has suspended provincial student loan collections for Islanders living in Fort McMurray until further notice.
