SYDNEY - A union official says contract talks are set to resume next month in an effort to avoid a walkout at a residential care facility in Cape Breton.

Workers who look after about 135 mentally disabled residents at the Braemore Home in Sydney have already warned a strike is possible.

But CUPE representative Kathy MacLeod said today the union has been told by a provincial conciliation officer that management is willing to go back to the bargaining table.

MacLeod says the talks are set for April 4.

She says several issues remain unresolved.

MacLeod has said the 120 care workers want the management of Braemore Home Corp. to agree to convert temporary positions to full-time jobs.

They also want improved night and weekend pay for casual workers.

She has said the union already has a tentative agreement with the province on monetary issues for full-time workers.

The workers look after the residents and provide laundry and dietary services.
