A 17-year-old boy from Dartmouth has been arrested in connection with the death of Joseph Douglas Cameron.

Cameron was found shot to death in the Woodlawn area of Dartmouth on March 29th, the first in a series of shooting deaths in the Halifax region this spring.

Nearly three months after 20-year-old Joseph Douglas Cameron was found dead, police arrested a teen in connection with the case around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday at a residence on Spring Avenue in Dartmouth.

The youth is underage and cannot be identified. Police say he is being held for questioning – they will not say whether or not they have any other suspects in the case.

“Any arrest is important,” says Constable Dianne Woodworth of the Halifax Regional Police. “It’s obviously something we’re working towards for a conclusion for the family.”

For Cameron’s family, it’s been a difficult 12 weeks.

“It’s kind of surreal, like it never happened,” said Cameron’s stepmother, April Miners. “You know, you get your moments when you break down.”

Miners says now that an arrest has been made, her family is hoping for closure.

“I’m not going to get my hopes up,” she said.

Cameron’s passing was the first in a series of gun deaths – Tyler Richards, Naricho Clayton, and Daverico Downey were killed in back-to-back shootings in mid-April.

Police won’t say whether a tip led to Thursday’s arrest.

All four homicides have been added to the province’s Major Unsolved Crimes Program – which offers a maximum reward of $150,000 for tips leading to an arrest and conviction.

“There’s nothing to definitively link the Joseph Cameron homicide to the others,” says Const. Woodworth. “However, through the course of the investigation, things can come up and things can change.”

No charges have been laid in connection with any of the homicides.
