The coroner’s inquest examining what happened to Serena Perry heard from members of  the Saint John police force on Wednesday, about their actions following the 22-year-old’s death on Feb. 14, 2012.

Four Saint John patrol officers testified that they werecalled to the Saint John Regional Hospital on the morning after Perry’s body was found in the hospital’s amphitheatre.

The officers said they had instructions to arrest two male psychiatric patients, whose names are subject to a publication ban. Each of those patients was informed that he was being arrested for murder, but charges were never laid in the case.

The police officers testified that the two young men were read their rights, placed in handcuffs, and taken to the police station for questioning.

While they were waiting to be interviewed, one of the young men was told he was no longer under arrest for murder, but might be considered a witness in the case, the officers testified.

No one was everchargedbecause a cause of death could not be determined, police said.

Throughout the inquest, Lawyer P.J. Veinotte asked those who had contact with Perry, whether she had ever displayed suicidal tendencies.

“She loved life. She believed in God. She wanted a home, a life, a family, a child. So never, ever would I think she would do anything (of the kind),” said Licensed Practical Nurse Brenda Gillespie.

In the moments after Serena’s body was found, Gillespie said a young male patient was sitting at a table with tears in his eyes. He told Gillespie that Serena had been acting funny: She had asked for his housecoat, and he gave it to her.

Asked if she had any recommendations for the jury, Gillespie suggested the psychiatric unit should be closer to the emergency room.

“You heard one of the ladies say that they’d like to be down on the ground floor closer to the emergency room, as an LPN — and yes, that will probably be among the recommendations,” said Veinotte.

The inquest is expected to learn more about the mental health of the young male patient Thursday and Friday.
