The mayor of Port Hawkesbury, N.S., wants the company negotiating to buy the idled NewPage paper mill to issue a public update on how the process is proceeding.

Billy Joe MacLean says that it's been a frustratingly long time since public comment about the sales process was made and the community is feeling anxious.

MacLean says he last talked to Pacific West Commercial Corp. president Ron Stern about two weeks ago.

He says some of the mill's workers who initially put off looking for alternate employment in the hopes of a quick sale have begun looking for other jobs.

The mill in Point Tupper was shut down in September, throwing 600 employees out of work and affecting another 400 forestry contractors.

Creditor protection is in place until March 31, although an application could be made to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court to extend that period.
