It has been five years since shots rang out on a rainy street in Trenton, N.S., and a father of four was gunned down in front of his home.

Eddie Phalen was killed while returning home from a nearby store. His wife, Veronica Phalen, was getting her kids ready for bed that night, then heard loud bangs outside her door.

“I came back and I got a coat and I got my phone, and went out and saw Ed on the street,” said Veronica Phalen.

In the years since there's been no arrest, and no resolution for the family.

“You can't even imagine,” said Veronica. “Every second of every day, it's like a nightmare you just don't wake up from.”

Eddie Phalen's mother, Carol Phalen, thinks about her son every day, and in darker times about his killer.

“I hope their life is miserable,” she said. “As miserable as mine.”

The family says they understand the police are trying everything they can.

“With the passage of time, it makes it difficult to locate witnesses and memories do fade even after five years of what exactly took place,” said Cpl. Jennifer Clarke of Nova Scotia RCMP. “The small details are very, very important with an investigation like this.”

The Phalen murder remains on the Nova Scotia rewards for unsolved crimes program. Both the family and police believe somebody in the community knows something, and they're asking them to come forward to help solve this crime.
