RCMP investigators spent the day Saturday trying to piece together what caused two deadly collisions on Maritime roads.

Just after 11 a.m. a three car crash occured on Highway 103, just outside Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia ending a woman’s life.

“It was a serious motor vehicle accident on Highway 103, between exits five and six,” says S/Sgt. Gerald Grobmeier of the Halifax RCMP.

Dozens of first responders arrived on the scene, closely followed by the crew on board the EHS Air Ambulance. When they arrived, they saw the wreckage of the three vehicle crash involving two cars and a truck. People of scene said a woman was trapped inside one of the vehicles. However, the air ambulance left without putting anyone on board.

“They left without a passenger,” Grobmeier. “Unfortunately, the one driver passed away before they were able to get her to a hospital.”

It is believed the woman who died was in her 50s. She had been travelling alone.

The others involved in the crash walked away with only minor bumps and bruises.

Some witnesses say the deceased woman’s car had been driving in the passing lane when it crossed the yellow line and side swiped the truck. It’s believed her car then hit a Volkswagon.

Police don’t believe speed was a factor, but they’re still confirming details. The highway was shut down for several hours, backing up traffic for more than two kilometres while police investigated.

“It’s still unfortunate that we have one deceased individual who didn’t make it and any time that happens, it’s tragic,” says Grobmeier.

A New Brunswick man was also the victim of a fatal crash early Saturday morning. A 41-year-old man from Colpitts Settlement was pinned after his vehicle flipped on a trail in Grande-Digue around 4:30 a.m. His name has not been released and RCMP are still investigating.
