At least eight people including an extended family of six had to evacuate two apartments in a building in the Clayton Park area of Halifax on Sunday afternoon. Water from a flooded parking lot seeped into the building, compromising the safety of their electrical panels and wiring.
Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service ordered the power disconnected to the two apartments, both on the lower level of an eight-unit building at 29 Gebhardt Street.
Disaster volunteers from the Canadian Red Cross arranged emergency lodging and food for a couple and their three children from one apartment. A relative who lived with them is staying elsewhere for now. Tenants of the other apartment made their own arrangements to stay with family or friends.
It's hoped the affected apartments can be dried out and the electrical service inspected and restored on Monday, allowing the tenants to return home.
