After walking out of class on Friday in protest of what they say are discriminatory dress codes, students at Fredericton High School met with school district officials on Monday.

Now, the young women – members of the Fredericton Youth Feminists – are waiting to see if their message has been heard.

Megan Hill and two other members of the group met for more than 90 minutes with officials from the Anglophone West School District, pressing them to scrap dress codes in New Brunswick’s largest school district and replace them with a new sexual assault policy.

“They were pretty open to what we had to say,” Hill said.

The students feel the dress code allows for the sexualization of female students and that the policy is enforced more harshly with women than with their male counterparts.

The head of the Anglophone West School District said he will consider what the group is proposing.

“I think it's important for me to engage some students across our district to get some ideas and I'll work on that, here, in the next little while, and I would say that we'll meet again," said superintendent David McTimoney.

The Fredericton Youth Feminists are hoping to see change sooner rather than later, but say later looks more likely.

“We understand it takes time to get all the information and resources together, but we want things to happen this school year, for sure,” Hill said.

McTimoney said there isn’t a timeline for potential policy changes, but that further meetings would be held with the group after the Christmas break.

For now, the students have been asked to end public demonstrations – like the protest on Friday that saw about 50 students walk out of class – while the school district considers the issue.

"I think the goal of that was to raise attention, get the community talking and, that way, to show the school district that this is an important issue, that people do care about,” said Sorcha Beirne, another member of the Fredericton Youth Feminists.

The students said the walkouts won’t continue if they see the school district moving in a positive way.
