Fundraising efforts are underway for the children of a Saint John woman found dead in her home on the weekend.

Officers were called to investigate a suspicious death at a residence on Carmarthen Street on Sunday.

Police say 43-year-old Cynthia Irving was not breathing and was unresponsive when officers arrived on scene. They confirm she was the victim of a homicide.

Her husband, 53-year-old Joseph Paul Irving, has been charged with second-degree murder in her death.

Cynthia Irving leaves behind four children between the ages of 10 and 20.

“The kids are left with no mother, no father. Cindy worked her hardest for her kids,” says the victim’s sister, Katelyn Thorne.

“She worked so that her kids could have what they have, so that they could do their cheerleading, go to their hockey, do whatever they wanted to do, and I just wanted to create a fund so they could still do that stuff.”

An online fundraising effort had brought in close to $1,000 by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Irving’s family says they are overwhelmed by the support shown in their community.

“The support from everybody has been amazing,” says Thorne. “It’s been a very difficult time but definitely the support that people have given us has made things a little easier.”

Joseph Irving is due back in court on April 14.
