A weekend fire in downtown Grand Falls has left nine people temporarily homeless.

Grand Falls fire Chief Charlie Kavanaugh tells Bell Media Radio the blaze broke out at 136 Broadway Boulevard, next to the Royal Canadian Legion, around 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Kavanaugh says the fire started on the roof of the building – which is home to nine apartments and a clothing store – and was under control within an hour.

He says fire damage was limited to the roof area, and there is smoke and water damage throughout the building.

Kavanaugh says the cause is still under investigation but it appears to be accidental; no injuries were reported.

He says four of the nine tenants are receiving help from the Canadian Red Cross, and four others are staying with family or friends; one tenant was out of town at the time.

There's no word at this point when those tenants may be able to return home.

Kavanaugh says firefighters from nearby Drummond were called in to help battle the blaze.
