Halifax District RCMP charged five motorists and issued one license suspension at police checkpoints and traffic stops Friday night.

Two of the five motorists were charged for impaired driving following two separate motor vehicle collisions on Caldwell Road and Astral Drive in Cole Harbour Friday night. RCMP say there were no injuries in either collision.

RCMP charged a third motorist during a traffic stop on Caldwell Road, and a fourth after pulling over the driver on Highway 107. RCMP say a fifth driver was charged after failing a breath test at a checkpoint on Highway 102, the same checkpoint that stopped a sixth driver, who was issued a seven-day license suspension for having a blood alcohol level of more than 0.05.

“Impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and death on our roadways,” says Nova Scotia RCMP Cst. Jamall Gray. “Getting behind the wheel after drinking or doing drugs is always dangerous, and the RCMP will continue to search for and charge drivers who choose to drive while impaired.”

RCMP ask anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver to contact police.
