Another taxi driver has been charged following a string of sexual assaults in Halifax area cabs.
Saher Hamdan, 28, is facing one count of sexual assault. He was arrested Thursday after turning himself in.
He is charged in connectionwith an incident on July 15. A young woman told police she was picked up by an older model, four-door white taxi on Lacewood Drive between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
The driver stopped the vehicle on Sherwood Street and when the woman asked how much she owed, the man allegedly tried to kiss the woman, locked her door and touched her in a sexual manner without her consent.
Hamdan is the latest taxi driver to face a sexual assault charge in Halifax.
There have been five reported sexual assaults involving taxi drivers in Halifax so far this year. Police have laid charges in three of the cases, including 44-year-old cabbie Milad Houssen who's facing two charges from incidents in June and July.
Halifax police say two of the sexual assault investigations from this year are still ongoing, and that investigators are working daily on the cases.
Halifax police also say they work closely with taxi companies during these investigations.
"Find out who was maybe driving the taxi at that time, and in that course, they would request to speak with that person, and that person would come in to Halifax Regional Police and speak with investigators at that time. So the investigators would get to know who was driving that taxi and who that taxi driver would be,” says Halifax Regional Police Cst. Alicia Joseph.
Police are not revealing the names of the taxi companies where the two men who have been charged work, saying the business is not being charged.
Saher Hamdan is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 5.
