The president of Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia Railway says the firm suspects a mechanical problem caused  three cars to derail in downtown New Glasgow on Thursday afternoon.

The company says the railway will need more time to finish the investigation into the incident, but, the cars themselves, are the focus of the inquiry.

The cars were carrying steel plates.

No hazardous materials were spilled in the incident.

No one was injured in the derailment.
