CHARLOTTETOWN -- Prince Edward Islanders voting in the May 4 election will have a better chance tonight to judge the party leaders who want to govern them.

The first of two leaders debates is being held this evening.

Liberal Premier Wade MacLauchlan and Tory leader Rob Lantz are both brand new to their jobs, taking on the helm of their parties earlier this year.

The NDP and Green parties have also taken on new leaders since P.E.I. held its last provincial election in 2011.

A political science professor with the University of P.E.I says the overall political inexperience is evident in the campaigns.

Don Desserud suggests it's a reason the Tories are having trouble capitalizing on scandals linked to the previous Liberal administration of Premier Robert Ghiz.

The Ghiz government has been tied to scandals involving a failed Internet gambling initiative and an immigrant investor program that was the subject of an RCMP investigation.

The second debate will be held Thursday.
