Prince Edward Island's premier says the province will be cutting 60 teaching positions over a three-year period.

Robert Ghiz gave out the figure during debate in the legislature with Opposition Leader Olive Crane.

Crane had said the province was planning to eliminate 120 teachers as part of the government's budget cuts.

The Tory leader's assertion came after to news earlier this week that the province plans to eliminate some teaching positions due to declining enrolments.

Crane pressed the issue and turned her questions to Education Minister Alan McIsaac as she asked if he consulted the P.E.I. Teachers' Federation before deciding to cut the positions.

McIsaac said he plans to meet with the federation on Friday.
