FREDERICTON -- The New Brunswick government says raising the harmonized sales tax, implementing highway tolls and increasing corporate taxes were among the most frequent suggestions during public meetings it held during the last two months.
The Liberal government held the meetings as part of its strategic program review as it looks for ways to find savings and new revenue of about $600 million per year.
The government says it has a structural deficit of about $400 million annually.
Victor Boudreau, the minister responsible for the strategic program review, said in a statement that other suggestions included investing more in agriculture and tourism and increasing royalties paid on natural resources.
Boudreau said decisions will be made in time for the government's second budget in 2016.
