RCMP in Cape Breton are investigating a two-vehicle collision that sent three people to hospital Sunday evening.

Emergency crews responded to the crash on Highway 105 near Baddeck shortly after 8 p.m.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that a driver of a Ford Ranger was travelling west in the eastbound lane when he collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Corolla.

The Jaws of Life were used to extract the driver from the Ranger and two women from the Corolla.

Both occupants of the Corolla, aged 54 and 52, were taken to Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, one with life-threatening injuries. They are both from the Glace Bay area.

The driver of the Ranger, a man from Baddeck, was taken to Victoria County Memorial Hospital in Baddeck with suspected internal injuries. He remains in hospital.

Police say the highway was shut down for three hours Sunday evening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
