OROMOCTO, N.B. - Union officials say the federal government refuses to explain its rationale behind proposed job cuts to civilian defence workers at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown in New Brunswick.

The government plans to cut up to 145 jobs at the base, but Morris Shannon, the local president of the Union of National Defence Employees, says government officials won't meet to discuss how those positions were chosen.

Shannon says he's been trying to get a meeting with Keith Ashfield, the area's MP, for two years.

Ashfield was not immediately available for comment.

Nova Scotia New Democrat MP Peter Stoffer says the jobs are being cut to correct the fiscal mismanagement of the Conservative government.

Jeannie Baldwin, regional vice-president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada, says the cuts are putting stress on employees and the community.

The affected workers perform a variety of jobs including maintenance, transportation and administration.
