HALIFAX -- The generosity of Maritimers was in full force for the 57th annual Christmas Daddies Telethon on Saturday. Despite an unusual year and trying times amid a pandemic, goodwill prevailed and saw the event raise $608,104.82 – the largest total since 2011.

The fundraiser, which aired on CTV during a seven-hour broadcast, will benefit local children and families in need during the holiday season.

“Who could have ever imagined such results during a pandemic?” says Roxanne Robinson, the executive director of Christmas Daddies. “We’re so grateful that Maritimers continue to support us and the kids of the Maritimes.”

Christmas Daddies was a physically-distanced affair for 2020, with minimal in-studio appearances. Bell Aliant employees showed their dedication by remotely volunteering from home to take the pledges and donations that flowed in throughout the day.

“I am so pleased and proud of the contributions by CTV employees who volunteer their time, and who really pulled the show together,” says Robinson. “Everyone stepped up this year to ensure its success.”

A beloved and well-known Maritime tradition, Christmas Daddies has proved itself over the years, supporting communities all across the region.

The 2020 Telethon featured entertainers from across Canada and the United States. Actor Alan Arkin, considered by many as an honorary Cape Bretoner, enlisted celebrities such as Steve Carrell, John Goodman and Ann-Margret to send pre-recorded messages of support to the telethon.

With the telethon raising a nine-year high, Robinson is thankful to everyone who showed support during less-than-usual times.

“Thank you to all who stepped up to make the show a success and support those who need us at this time of year,” says Robinson. “This proves that the children of the Maritimes are not forgotten – even during a pandemic.”
