HALIFAX -- A photo of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders at the presidential inauguration is sparking some creative and hilarious photo edits of Sanders popping up in all kinds of situations, and the Maritimes are no exception.
Standing out in a crowd of glamorously dressed guests, Bernie Sanders showed up for the U.S. presidential inauguration in a heavy winter jacket and patterned mittens.
Social media users quickly pounced on AFP photographer Brendan Smialowski's shot of a bundled-up Sanders sitting cross-legged, superimposing it on a wide variety of images.
Maritime social media users have embraced the meme with open arms, as the Vermont Senator seems to be popping up all over the region.
Atlantic Canada’s largest airport got in on the fun, with Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s official Twitter account posting a photo of Sanders seated at the airport, along with the caption ‘When you find out the Timmie's after security isn't open.’
Once he arrived in the Maritimes, Bernie seemed to travel all over Nova Scotia, from Yarmouth to the Cabot Trail, downtown Dartmouth to Scott’s Bay. At one point it seems Sanders caught a Halifax Transit bus to help him get around the city.
Twitter user @PsychicAmanda82 submitted Sanders at Peggy's Cove (not sitting on the black rocks) and outside the Cobequid Community Health Centre. Nova Scotia Webcams also captured Sanders taking in one of the region's most scenic views at Peggy's Cove.
Bernie popped up at a few concerts and album covers of Halifax-based musician Rich Aucoin, and visited with Halifax-based funk and soul band Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound, who joked the Senator would play the triangle.
A noted advocate of universal education, Bernie checked out the campuses of Fredericton's University of New Brunswick and Halifax's Mount Saint Vincent University.
In New Brunswick, Sanders was spotted outside of Moncton’s Public Library, and Avenir Centre, several locations in Saint John, including Market Square, and took a seat next to Lord Stanley in Sackville, N.B. He even stopped by Canadian Blood Services New Brunswick headquarters.
On his tour of the Maritimes, Bernie appears to have stopped at some iconic restaurants such as Halifax’s Loose Cannon and Cape Breton’s Lick-A-Chick.
It was only fitting that Sanders, a career politician, visited the New Brunswick legislature and even time travelled back to 1864, at the Charlottetown Conference.
P.E.I. Premier Dennis King posted a picture of himself along with six other former P.E.I. Premiers with a surprise guest appearance from Bernie seated between former Premiers Jim Lee and Catherine Callbeck.
No photo editing was needed for N.S. NDP leader Gary Burrill, who posted a photo imitating Sanders pose and fashion sense while sitting outside of his campaign headquarters, and adding a caption that compared some of his policy goals with Sanders, including rent control, a $15 minimum wage, and a room for every long-term care resident.
Another politician who got in on the Bernie fun around the region included N.S. Liberal leadership candidate Labi Kousoulis.
