A burn ban is in effect for much of the Maritimes, due to a high risk of wildfires.

All of mainland Nova Scotia is under a burn ban, meaning residents are not allowed to burn domestic brush or campfires.

Restrictions on burning are in place in Cape Breton, where domestic brush burning and campfires are allowed between 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. only.

A province-wide burn ban is in place in New Brunswick and also in Prince Edward Island. All burning permits are invalid in those provinces while the ban is in place.

Manager of Wildfire Management Jim Rudderham says low humidity, high temperatures, high winds and no rain have resulted in ban.

“We're hoping we don't get any fire starts today because if we get a fire started, the potential would be very bad,” said Rudderham. “It could grow very quickly, very fast, (and) get out of control. We don't want that to happen.”

Rudderham says in the majority of cases, the wildfires are started by people. He says sometimes it’s done on purpose, but often because of carelessness.
