A Dartmouth man has been charged with second-degree murder in the 2010 shooting death of Ryan Matthew White.

Kale Leonard Gabriel, 25, is currently incarcerated at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre in Ontario on an unrelated matter.

Police say he will appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face the murder charge.

Officers responded to a shooting in the 100 block of Jarvis Lane in Halifax before 11 p.m. on July 22, 2010.

When they arrived on the scene they found White lying on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The 21-year-old Halifax man was taken to hospital and died from his injuries the next day.

Police arrested three men in connection with the case in July 2012 but they were released without charges after being questioned.

White’s case was added to the Nova Scotia Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program on July 6, 2012.

Police say information received through the program, which offers a cash reward of up to $150,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in an unsolved case, led to Gabriel’s arrest.

The Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program was launched in October 2006 as another tool for law enforcement to use in solving crime.

There are currently more than 70 cases on the province’s list.

Police say the investigation into White’s death is ongoing.
