A New Brunswick MLA is urging doctors to reassess their plan to sue the province.

Dr. Jim Parrott, a former heart surgeon, says he doesn’t support the New Brunswick Medical Society’s plan to take the government to court.

Parrott, a lifetime member of the medical society, plans to speak at an emergency meeting this afternoon.

“I don’t think that the lawsuit is the way to go. With lawsuits, if they go to fruition, there’s always a winner and there’s always a loser and the win is always hollow,” says the independent MLA.

“It sets yourself up for further difficulties in the future…the guy that loses, he can hardly wait to get at you again.”

The New Brunswick Medical Society, which represents the province’s almost 1,700 doctors, filed the lawsuit last week.

It wants to hold the government to a signed agreement regarding salaries and fees, but the province wants doctors to help find $20 million in savings in the health department’s budget.

New Brunswick’s health minister placed a full-page ad in several newspapers across the province on Thursday, asking doctors to help stem the flow of red ink from the province’s balance sheet.
