The community of Africville has magically re-appeared for the weekend.
Tents, big and small, have sprung-up at the site for the annual reunion of former residents and their descendants.
Increasingly, it’s becoming an event with a touch of sadness, as the generations of elders are growing smaller.
“My grandparents aren’t here any longer,” says former resident Charles Adams. “We’re seeing each year the passing of many of the elders, and they were the ones that passed on the information and legacy to the younger generation, if you will."
Still, there are some who are determined to make sure the story of Africville, and the reunion, does not fade into history.
“We would go pick berries; we would skip rope on the dirt road in front of us,” explains reunion organizer Linda Mantley. “We would play marbles; we also swam in the Bedford Basin.”
Organizers say they are focusing more on children these days.
