HALIFAX - Halifax council has decided to pass on the construction of a new stadium.

The city council vote on Tuesday followed a report last week by city staff that recommended shelving the project because it was too costly.

The staff report cited a lack of funding partners for the project as the main reason for the recommendation.

City council had agreed to contribute $20 million toward the project, but the stadium's completion was contingent upon finding another $34 million to $51 million.

Council has approved the next phase of a stadium analysis report and has decided to include the project as part of the city's capital budget plan for future consideration.

The vote takes Halifax out of the running as one of the potential hosts of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup of soccer.
