Allan Bragg has been volunteering in his community for over 50 years.

Allan is a charter member of the United Commercial of Travelers – a non-profit organization of people helping people. Over the years he's organized a number of community events, including a skate jamboree that put the group on the map.

“He visited 37 schools to get them on board,” says Samuel Adams, Allan’s friend. “That first year we had 900 kids for a one day event.”

That number continued to grow with over 7,000 kids participating over 10 years.

Allan is also credited with singlehandedly raising more than $28,000 to help finance the first ever Special Olympics held in Nova Scotia.

“Allan is a hard guy to say no too. He just makes you want to get involved,” says Samuel.

Allan’s friends and colleagues say his leadership, kindness, and compassion has made a difference in the lives of the less fortunate.

“Community and compassion unite and Allan is a very compassionate person. We help a lot of people, Allan helps a lot of people,” says Samuel.

MLA Alfie MacLeod was on hand Friday, to present an award for community involvement from the provincial government.

“If you go somewhere Allan is there, he's like that bad weather,” says Alfie. “He's everywhere. He's an amazing guy and gives a lot back to the community and he's fun to work with.”

Allan says it is important to keep active.

“Like a fella says, get up and get moving. If you stop you won't be able to get up at all. It's much better if you’re active. I'm retired, but sometimes I think I should get a job to get a rest,” says Allan.

Congratulations to Allan Bragg, our Maritimer of the Week.
