A mother who fought tirelessly to have fencing erected along a hotspot for highway-moose encounters is now fighting a new battle.

Cathy McCollum says trees are slumped over the fencing along Highway 7 between Saint John and Fredericton, which is causing parts of the fence to sag. She says the fence appears to be falling down in some areas, giving animals a chance to enter the roadway.

“The government is not maintaining it,” says McCollum. “They’re supposed to be maintaining it and they’re not doing it.”

McCollum played a critical role in having the fencing erected along Highway 7 after her daughter survived a vehicle collision with a moose. The incident prompted McCollum to gather more than 10,000 signatures to have the fencing put in place.

She says it is unacceptable that part of the fence is now falling down.

“They’re not paying attention. They’re supposed to look after it, that was the agreement,” she says. “They’re not looking after it. It’s a main highway.”

The New Brunswick Department of Transportation and Infrastructure says they are in the process of hiring a contractor to repair portions of the fence that have been compromised. The department says some repairs have already been done this summer, but did not provide a timeline for when the rest of the repairs will be completed.

McCollum says the fence should have been repaired before the summer months, which is considered prime time for moose encounters.

She says she has contacted the department several times over the last few weeks, urging them to finish the repairs as soon as possible.

“I shouldn’t have to be doing this, but I guess I’m doing it again.”

The RCMP say they are aware some of the moose fencing is down and they are asking drivers to be cautious.

“Go the speed limit and slow down in the those areas and be aware that the fencing may not contain all the animals,” says Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh.

McCollum says she isn’t looking to lead another crusade, but may be forced to if the repairs aren’t made soon.

“It’s so beneficial and important that the fence be up because it has made a big difference on that highway.”
