Environment Canada says Nova Scotia can expect some messy weather this weekend and early next week.

The forecaster says a low pressure system passing south of Nova Scotia will begin in the west Saturday afternoon and spread eastward overnight.

The system is expected to dump between 10 to 20 centimetres of snow throughout the province, with up to 40 centimetres possible in the southwestern areas.

Snow and gusts of wind will begin Saturday afternoon, before tapering off in the west of the province Sunday morning and in the east by Sunday afternoon.

It also says there may be a second system approaching Monday, possibly beginning with snow in the morning, then changing to freezing rain for some areas throughout the day, before ending on Monday night.
